1. How does the scholarship process work?

Scholarship eligibility is determined by the review and approval of one of two completed forms:  the lunch letter application or the traditional application.  These forms can be found on the main scholarship page here. The application can be submitted directly from the web form.

2. Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?

Any resident of Johnson County or anyone that works in Johnson County is eligible to apply for a JCPRD scholarship.  

3. How is scholarship eligibility determined?

Subject to available funds, scholarship eligibility is determined in the following manner:

• Must be a resident of Johnson County or working in Johnson County.
• If using the lunch letter application, those who receive free or reduced lunch through their local school district will be considered eligible.
• If using the traditional application, the Kansas Department of Education reduced-price status is used as an alternate method for income eligibility to insure consistency and equity across all users.

4. How much in funds are available for approved applicants?

A qualifying individual may now receive $100 per calendar year and use it towards any JCPRD class, event, or rental.  There are no longer restrictions on how the dollars may be used. The start date for each class, program or event must fall within the approved scholarship year. Unused balances will not be carried forward into a new scholarship year.

5. How long is an approved scholarship valid for?

The scholarship year begins on January 1st and ends on December 31st of the same year. Even though individuals may apply for scholarships at any time throughout the year, programs, classes, and events using scholarship funds must have “start dates” during the current qualifying scholarship year.  

6. What programs are not eligible for scholarship funds?

There are no longer restrictions on how the dollars may be used.

7. If my family is approved, how do I register my family members for a program?

Scholarship participants or registrants may register by mail, phone, fax, or in person.  Web pre-registrations are not eligible for this program due to the advance payment requirement on the website.  Phone-in registrations and walk-ins are accepted between the hours of 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.  Please let the Registration Office know you are using your scholarship allocation.

8. I have a foster child. Are they automatically eligible for a scholarship?

A foster child residing in Johnson County is automatically eligible for a calendar year scholarship of $100. Please note “foster child-NAME” when filling out the lunch letter application. The rest of the family’s (if desired) eligibility will be determined by the standard guidelines.
