A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

July 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, & 28 - Open Water Swim Training (Ages 18 & Older)
- Shawnee Mission Park Beach, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, 5:30 to 6 p.m., $8 per person, $10 nonresidents - Looking to train for an upcoming triathlon or to change up your swim workout? JCPRD offers open water swim training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Shawnee Mission Park Beach. All swimmers should be able to swim 500 meters freestyle and have endurance to swim in open water conditions and must bring and wear their tow buoy float at all times while in the water. Lifeguard will be on duty. All participants must be pre-registered by 10 a.m. on the day of the training. A minimum number of participants must be registered or the practice will be canceled. If a participant is registered for a canceled practice date, a full refund will be given. July 5 activity number 21867.
July 5 - Movies in the Park: “Mary Poppins (1964)” (Rated G)
- Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, Gates open at 8 p.m., movie starts between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., depending on sunset, FREE thanks to the support of The Parks & Recreation Foundation of Johnson County, Arvest Bank, and JE Dunn - 3rd of 11 through Oct. 28 - A stiff banker searches for a nanny for his two mischievous children in London in the early 1900s. After dismissing several unsuitable prospects, a young woman descends from the sky and manages to enlighten the lives of everyone she meets. Disney favorite won five Academy Awards in all.
July 5-7 - Volleyball: Okun July Summer Break Camp (Grades 3-8)
- Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, 9:30 a.m. to Noon, 3 sessions, $65 per person, $72 nonresidents - Get some quality volleyball experience with Coach Gwenn Pike! Practice serving, passing, setting, and hitting in small group drills and scrimmage-like play. Participants will be divided into groups based on age and ability. July 5-7 - Basketball: Okun July Summer Break Camp - (Grades K-3 & Grades 4-8)
- Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, times vary, 3 sessions, $55 per person, $61 nonresidents - Get in the game with JCPRD basketball camps at Okun Fieldhouse! Players will participate in drills, group activities, and scrimmages offering group and one-on-one instruction. Players will practice shooting, passing, ball handling, offense, and defense. Session for grades K-3, 1 to 2:30 p.m., activity number 22135. Session for grades 4-8, 3 to 4:30 p.m. same days and costs, activity number 22137. July 6 - Meadowbrook Walkers (Ages 50 & Older)
- Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 9 to 9:50 a.m., 4 sessions, $3 per person, $4 nonresidents - Meet new people, catch up with old friends, and feel great being active at the same time! Meet at Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse for coffee and end with a 30-minute walk! Activity number 21701.
July 6 - Multi-Sport: Totally Tots (Ages 3 to 5)
- Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $3 per person, $4 nonresidents - Get active, have fun, and learn to play with new friends! Kids will get a chance to play games, learn sports, and meet new friends! Activity number 21934.
July 6 - Games: Intro to Mah Jongg (Ages 50 & Older)
- Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Wednesdays, 1 to 3 p.m., 4 sessions, $47 per person, $51 nonresidents - Learn the basics of this classic tabletop game from an experienced instructor. Each player receives a current Mah Jongg card to take home. Activity number 21761.
July 6 - Games: Bingo - Ahoy Mateys! (Ages 50 & Older)
- Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell, Overland Park, 1:30-3:30 $5 per person, $6 nonresidents - BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun and 12 games of bingo. A variety of prizes will be awarded including gift certificates. Please pre-register at least one week in advance. Payment is required at time of registration. For the enjoyment of all participants, children are not permitted to attend 50 Plus Bingos. Cost of admission covers snacks and staff time to administer the bingo program. July 7 - Day Trip: Caverns and Cars (Ages 50 & Older)
- Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., $132 per person - Explore the underground world of Fantastic Caverns by way of tram. See spectacular sights while learning about the cave system. After lunch, visit the Route 66 Car Museum. Marvel at cars from the Brass Era, sports cars, classics, and even celebrity cars. Shop one of the best collections of Route 66 memorabilia and gift shops in the nation. Activity number 21628.
July 8, 15, 22 & 29 - Friday Amphitheater Programs (All Ages)
- Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 7 to 7:45 p.m., $4 per person - Bring the family to the new outdoor amphitheater at Ernie Miller Park on Friday nights during June and July for entertaining and educational experiences. Each program is approximately 45 minutes to one hour in length and begins at 7 pm. In case of inclement weather, including extreme heat, program will be held indoors. Advance registration is recommended and closes each Friday at 4 p.m.; onsite registration is cash only, if space is available. July 8 - Gardening: Native Plants 101 (Ages 50 & Older)

July 9 - Art: Hydro Dip Paintings (Ages 8-15)
- Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., $50 per person, $55 nonresidents - Make your own paintings and decorative objects with swirling colors by dipping them into paint suspended on top of water. Activity number 21550.
July 9 - Fishing: Overnight Saturdays after 11 pm (All Ages)
- Lexington Lake Park, 8850 Sunflower Road, DeSoto, 11 p.m. - 5 a.m., permit fees vary - After 11 p.m., the park will be open for fishing only and park police officers will be on duty throughout the night. Before fishing, area anglers will need to have a valid Kansas fishing license, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District fishing permit, trout permit if fishing for trout and all appropriate boat tags, if applicable.
