A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at (913) 826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Oct. 17 through 23:
Oct. 10 - Yoga: Sunday Paved Trail Yoga Hike (Heritage Park, 16050 S Pflumm Rd, Olathe, Ages 14 and Older, 10 a.m. to Noon, $15 per person, $17 nonresidents) - Start your Sunday with a gentle Yoga session followed by a beautiful hike through Heritage Park as you explore the paved trails on a three-mile route. Please bring a mat or blanket for yoga in the grass. Activity number 15332.
Oct. 18 - Yoga: Yoga (Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, Ages 14 & Older, Mondays, 5:30 - 6:20 p.m., 5 sessions, $39 per person, $43 nonresidents) - Improve circulation, regulate your metabolism, and increase flexibility and coordination with this low-intensity yoga class. You will lengthen your muscles while increasing both muscle and bone density. Yoga participants of all levels are welcome. Join us for this class and find out all the benefits of yoga in your life. Oct. 18 - Games: Learn to Play... Cribbage (Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, Ages 50 Plus, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., $6 per person, $7 nonresidents) - A beginner's guide to what's sure to be your new favorite game. Oct. 18 - Art: Exploring Art Workshops - Who Am I? (Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, Ages 50 Plus, 9:30 to Noon, $15 per person, $17 nonresidents) - Discover new ways to create a self-portrait. Do you see yourself as another type of being? Abstract or realistic, the sky is the limit! Activity number 14291. This is the last in a series of four half-day workshops, each with a different way of looking at or creating art.
Oct. 19 - Special Interest: Armchair Travel to Omaha, Neb. (Virtual Program, Ages 50 Plus, 11 a.m., to Noon, FREE) - Take a trip to Omaha from the comfort of your armchair at home. Jessica Settje, from Visit Omaha, will give a brief history of the city before diving into its vibrant cultural offerings, in the Passport Tour. Then learn why billionaire Warren Buffett chooses to live, work, and play in Omaha, during the Billion Dollar Tour. Activity number 14142.
Oct. 19 - Special Interest: Medicare Basics (Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, Ages 50 Plus, 10 to Noon, FREE) - Get your Medicare questions answered and learn about plans and the enrollment process. Oct. 22 - Crafts: CR-afternoon (Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park, Ages 5 to 12 with an adult, 1 to 4 p.m., $31 per adult and child, $43 nonresidents, $8 / $9 per additional child) - Love to create trendy DIY crafts? We’ll have a variety of craft projects for your group to choose from. Staff will be available to assist with instruction and material distribution. Stop in anytime between 1 and 4 pm. Oct. 23 - Soccer: Tiny Tykes (Roeland Park Sports Dome, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Ages 2 to 3, Saturdays, 1 to 1:45 p.m., 4 sessions, $70 per person) - Are you looking for a fun introduction to the very basic elements for the game of soccer? If so, then Tiny Tykes is for you. Challenger Sports provides the top notch instructors. The program focuses on small groups, lots of kicking, laughing, and making new friends. The Tiny Tykes program is designed to introduce young children to the concepts of fun and interaction within a relaxed physical environment. Participants receive a ball and jersey. Oct. 23 - Map & Compass: Orienteering Workshop (Ernie Miller Park & Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, Ages 16 & Older, 9 a.m. to Noon, $15 per person, $17 nonresidents) - Do you like to hike cross-country but fear losing your way? This beginner’s workshop introduces you to orienteering, a fun way of learning the basic skills for using a topographic map and a magnetic compass. This class includes a practice orienteering hike in the park. Workbook and loan of compass are provided. Dress for the weather. Instructor: Possum Trot Orienteering Club. Activity number 14462.
Oct. 23 - Halloween: Haunted Kansas (Ernie Miller Park, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, Ages 8 & Older, 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. with six start times at 15 minute intervals, $7 per person -including adults, $8 nonresidents, $8 on-site on day of event if space if available) - As darkness falls, walk through the trails of Ernie Miller Park and listen to the stories of long ago. Characters from the past will share legends around the campfire. Expect a shiver down your spine and a mild case of goose bumps for those who dare enter the forest on this autumn evening. Reservations are required. Group sessions begin every 15 minutes with program length approximately 1½ hours. In case of inclement weather, program will be held indoors. Advance registration required.
