Here's some of the programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of May 9-15:
May 10 - Multi-Sport: Amazing Athletes (Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Monday through Friday 9:30 - 10:15 a.m., Ages 3-5, 5 sessions, $98 per child, $108 nonresidents) - Amazing Athletes uses a multi-sport program to introduces the fundamentals of ten different sports in a non-competitive environment. Participants routinely gain greater confidence, learn to combine fitness with fun, and develop six key motor skills. Activity number 9783.
May 10 - Games: Intro to Mah Jongg (Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Mondays 10 a.m. - Noon, Ages 50 Plus, 4 sessions, $42 per person, $46 nonresidents) - Learn the basics of this classic tabletop game from an experienced instructor. Each player receives a current Mah Jongg card to take home. Activity number 9887.
May 11 & 12 - Animal Tales Storytime: Mother Nature (Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 10:30 - 11 a.m., Ages 2-6 with adult, $2 per person.) - Join a park naturalist for animal stories and surprises geared for preschool age children. Come listen, learn, and meet a special animal friend every time. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Program held indoors. May 11 session activity number 9576, April 12 session, 9577.
May 12 - Museum: Retro Storytime - “Lassie and Her Day in the Sun” (Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, All Ages, 10 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 museum members.) - Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! Craft activity included after the story ends. Listen to the clues and help guess the answers in this interactive Little Golden Book from 1949. “Lassie and Her Day in the Sun” - Follow Lassie the dog’s adventures as she saves the day in this Little Golden Book from 1958. May 13 - Special Interest: Western Settlement - Backdrop of Westerns (Virtual program, Ages 50 Plus, 10 - 11 a.m., FREE) - Join Instructor Larry Brown as he showcases how Hollywood Westerns are about taming the West and how concepts such as Manifest Destiny explain the myths we tell ourselves about who we are as Americans. Activity number 9773. This is the first of four monthly programs through August in the series How Hollywood Conquered the West. May 15 - Boating: Johnson County Sailing Society - Come Sail With Us! (Shawnee Mission Park Marina, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee, Noon - 1 p.m., Ages 18 & Older, FREE) - All sailors and sailing enthusiasts are warmly welcome to join us for lunch along with the graduates of the Sailing I class. Bring your sack lunch, and afterwards you will have an opportunity to sail a variety of vessels while participating in water activities like mock races or a sailing scavenger hunt. While this is listed as a one-hour event, organizers said it will continue until everyone who has shown an interest has an opportunity to take a ride. Activity number 9569.
