Clay classes for preschool and youth start March 7

Clay Creations

Clay classes for youth are being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District beginning March 7.

The classes are: Clay Creations for ages three through six and six through 12, and Potter’s Wheel Mini Series for ages 13 through 15. All sessions will take place at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.  To find these programs in the My JCPRD Activities catalog and online at JCPRD.com, browse first under preschool or youth  and then under fine & performing arts. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search,  look for the keyword “art.”

To register for these classes, call (913) 831-3359, or visit JCPRD.com were you can click on "Register for Activities" and then enter any of the course ID codes listed below.

The Clay Creations class for ages three through six  (course ID 27284) is meant to engage the child’s curiosity and imagination while they learn introductory ceramics concepts. Parents are welcome and encouraged to join this class. This program is offered at 10 a.m. Saturday beginning March 7. The cost for four 50-minute sessions is $39 for Johnson County Residents or $43 for nonresidents.

The Clay Creations class for ages six through 12 (course ID 27826) provides an opportunity for problem-solving and creative thinking within a tranquil and reassuring environment.  Young artists will have the opportunity to learn to properly adhere separate clay pieces through score and slip, how to use various clay tools, and to apply glaze to a finished design, culminating in beautiful works of art ready to display!  This class will also provide a first ’try’ on the challenging pottery wheel. This program is offered at 11 a.m. Saturday beginning March 7. The cost for four 90-minute sessions is $45 for Johnson County Residents or $50 for nonresidents.

In Potter’s Wheel Mini Series (course ID 27824), students ages 13 to 15 will expand their ceramics knowledge with an introduction to the potter’s wheel. This program is offered at 1 p.m. Saturday also beginning March 7. The cost for two two-and-one-half-hour sessions is $40 for Johnson County Residents or $45 for nonresidents.
