Bring your blankets of  lawn chairs and enjoy a  laid back party in the park, including a free outdoor concert and movie showing, when the Johnson County Park and Recreation District presents a special event in Shawnee Mission Park in late September.

This event is called Evening in the Park, and will include a one-and-one-half hour concert by  popular 1980’s tribute band the M80s beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a showing of the iconic 80’s movie, “Back to the Future.” The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Theatre in the Park, which has a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee. The Renner Road entrance will open at 5 p.m., and gates into the bowl will open at 5:30 p.m.

“The goal of this event is to thank our community for their engagement and support of JCPRD,” said Superintendent of Culture Susan Mong. “The weather will be cool, and we want everyone to enjoy a great Evening in the Park!”

Food will also be available for purchase during the event. Seven food trucks offering sweet and savory options, as well as  family-friendly concession items in the theater bowl will be available. An alcohol vendor will also be offerings beer and wine, as well as a signature fall drink.”

Through an online poll conducted earlier this year, the local community was involved in selecting the movie for this event.

September is National Deaf Awareness Month, and an interpreter will be on hand for staff remarks and closed captioning for the movie will be provided.  KC 102 Radio will also be onsite promoting the event.

The presentation of Evening in the Park this year follows a similar event called Park Palooza, which took place in September of 2017 and 2018.

“Park Palooza was a great event that provided informative booths to educate our public about various county services available to the public, and various entertainment offerings through the day,” Mong explained. “We decided to simplify the concept of the event with great music, a great movie, and great food and libation, and then Evening in the Park was born.”
