About 200 vehicles and 1,000 spectators are expected to attend the annual Cars in the Park car show on Saturday, Oct. 20, at The Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park.
The event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is a major annual fundraiser for the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's Special Olympics and Special Populations programs. For spectators, admission to the show is free and concessions will be available for purchase.
The show typically attracts an eclectic mix of cars, trucks, and motorcycles, from Model A’s to modern and customized vehicles. Part of the fun is seeing what area residents dust off and retrieve from their garages to display. Participant choice judging will be used for awards. There will also be food vendors, 50/50 Pot, a silent auction of sports memorabilia, a DJ, and more!
All proceeds from Cars in the Park benefit the JCPRD’s Special Olympics / Special Populations department. Specifically, these funds are typically used to help athletes afford to participate in activities.
For anyone interested in entering the show, vehicle registrations are being taken through the day of the event. All participants must be registered and on-site by noon to be judged. Special Olympian athletes will be voting on their favorite entry for the Athletes Choice Award. For those exhibiting vehicles, the fee is $20 per vehicle until the day of the show when it increases to $25. For participants, there will be a 50/50 pot. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at www.jcprd.com, click on “Register for Activities” button and complete a course ID search for 40292.
For businesses, Cars in the Park also offers booth space during the event for $50. To learn more, call Special Populations Coordinator Jodie McMahon at (913) 831-3355 or (913) 826-3027, or visit www.jcprd.com/carsinthepark.
