Five final August performances of the musical “Newsies” will close out the Theatre in the Park’s 2021 outdoor summer season of musicals.
Following its first two performances on July 30 and 31, “Newsies,” which is rated PG, will continue through Aug. 1, and Aug. 4 through 7. Also during August, three more films will be presented on the outdoor stage as part of the 2021 Movies in the Park program.
Set in turn-of-the century New York City, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right! Based on the 1992 Disney movie and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman. Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” "Newsies" is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.
Much more information about the theater and this production is available at the Theatre in the Park’s website. “Newsies” is sponsored in part by Renewal by Anderson.
For outdoor productions, gates open at 7 p.m., and shows begin at 8:30 p.m. General admission is $10 for adults, $6 for youth ages four to ten, plus tax, and free for children three and under, but tickets are still required. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online. “Anytime tickets” available via either ticket-buying method, are not specific to a certain night or performance, and can be printed out at home and scanned at the gate.
Continuing in 2021 is Thrifty Thursdays when a 20 percent discount is offered on the Thursday, Aug. 5, performance. This makes adult tickets $8 and children’s tickets $4.80, plus tax. The discounted tickets must be purchased at the box office for the specific show.
Also continuing are Movies in the Park, a program that lets participants see popular recent films on a 40-foot screen on the TIP stage for only $1 per person at the gate. August Movies in the Park shows are: Disney’s “Tangled,” rated PG, on Tuesday, Aug. 3; “The Incredibles,” rated PG, on Friday, Aug. 13; and “Up,” rated PG, on Friday, Aug. 20.
The Theatre in the Park’s outdoor location is north of the main entrance to Shawnee Mission Park at 7710 Renner Road in Shawnee.
