It’s not too late to sign up for two triathlons being presented by JCPRD in early July and late August.
The events are the 35th Annual Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon on July 7, which is now the metro's longest-running triathlon, and the sixth annual JCPRD U Kids Triathlon on Aug. 24.
The 35th Annual Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon occurs in Shawnee Mission Park and the adjoining Gary L. Haller Trail in the Mill Creek Streamway Park. For this event, participants and spectators will enter Shawnee Mission Park via the Theatre in the Park entrance at 7710 Renner Road, which is north of the park’s main entrance.
New this year is both an Olympic Course, which is longer than the triathlon’s regular Long Course, and a Super Sprint Short Course, which is shorter than the regular Short Course.
“Both distances are open to teams and individuals,” said Race Director Katy Renner. “We’re hopeful with the addition of the shorter distance that we might be able to capture new athletes, younger athletes, and additional para-athletes.”
The Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon is open to individuals and teams, ages 15 and older with participants competing in five-year age groups from 15 years old to 70 and older. The Triathlon Long Course consists of a 1,000-meter swim, followed by an 18-mile bike, and a 4.5-mile run inside Shawnee Mission Park. The New Olympic Triathlon Course consists of a 1,500-meter swim, a 27-mile bike, and a 6.2-mile run. The Short Triathlon Course consists of a 500-meter swim, followed by a 9-mile bike, and a 3.1-mile run. The New Super Sprint Triathlon Course consists of a 200-meter swim, a 4.5-mile bike, and a 2.25-mile run. The duathlon portion of the event includes a 3.1-mile run and a 13.5-mile bike, followed by another 3.1-mile run.
Each participant registered before June 30 will receive a T-shirt and a special “Mission Accomplished” medal, which is a nod to both the Shawnee Mission Park location, and the accomplishment completing this kind of event represents. Awards will be presented to the top three male, female, and team overall finishers in each of the courses. Individual awards will be presented to the top three athletes of each age division.
