While Meadowbrook Park’s grand opening has been postponed to June 22 due to excessive rain and forecasts calling for additional precipitation, public programs at the new park will go on as planned beginning June 3.

The current My JCPRD Activities catalog lists 55 programs at Meadowbrook during June, July, and August, including 24 programs and five events during June alone.

“Our goal at Meadowbrook is to provide all ages programming to the community that really focuses on the underlying theme of wellness,” said Recreation Coordinator Sophie Griffin. “We want to provide opportunities for people to interact with the new park and facility through fitness classes, nature programs, family events, and more. “

The 80-acre new park, its clubhouse, and other amenities also present a great opportunity to present JCPRD programs and events in an area of the county that has long been underserved.

“We’re really lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to serve the community in Northeastern Johnson County,” Griffin said. “There are really no other parks like Meadowbrook Park in the area. The features of the park offer so much for every age group. We plan to utilize the Grand Lawn for classes and programs, provide demonstrations of the fitness equipment at some of our special events, hold outdoor cooking classes in the Grand Pavilion, and give all ages a chance to engage with the new park through our programs.”

June events at Meadowbrook will include: Step Into Wellness (previously In Step & In Shape)  for 50 Plus on June 5, the new Bug Hunt for ages 3-5 with an adult on June 11, Special Event Bingo - International Picnic Day for 50 Plus on June 18, the new Super Sneaky Scavenger Hunt family fun event for all ages on June 21, and a Travel Show for 50 Plus on June 25.

As a special promotion, a variety of fitness classes planned at MBPC during the first week of June will offer participants the opportunity to take one class for free between June 3 and 7. Fitness classes during this time include: WERQ Exercise for ages 18 and older on June 3, June 5, and June 6 (18788); HIIT Exercise for ages 18 and older on June 4 and June 7; and Chair Yoga for 50 Plus on June 4 and June 6. To take a free class, no preregistration is required; just show up at the designated class time.

Registrations are now being taken for the Natureplay Preschool which will begin operations at Meadowbrook in August. All eight weeks of a Meadowbrook Natureplay Preschool Camp at the site this summer have already filled.

Programmers are also planning programs and seasonal events at Meadowbrook for the fall and winter. Look for the September through December My JCPRD Activities catalog out after July 22.

“On Halloween, we will host a preschool Pumpkin Party featuring a costumed parade through the (Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse) building and the chance to trick or treat,” Griffin said. “We will have an Outdoor Turkey cooking class this fall just in time for Thanksgiving. Participants will have the chance to learn about smoking, grilling, and more. We have an awesome family event coming up in December called Pajama Party Breakfast Bingo. “It’s a fun event where we encourage everyone to come play bingo in their jammies and let us take care of breakfast. We will have Kids’ Countdown taking place on New Year’s Eve at noon, giving kids a chance to celebrate the holiday with games and fun!”

The grand opening event for Meadowbrook Park on June 22 will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will involve a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m., comments from public officials, tours of the property and clubhouse, art activities, yoga and personal trainer demonstrations, snacks, giveaways, music, information about and opportunities to sign up for JCPRD programs, and more. Find a complete schedule of the day’s festivities at jcprd.com. Once the clubhouse parking lot clubhouse fills, overflow parking will be at Christ Church Anglican at 5500 W. 91st St., and at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall, both of which are across Nall to the west and are within easy walking distance.
