Fisheries

JCPRD offers 14 lakes and ponds and multiple streamway access points throughout the county for public fishing. Rainbow trout are stocked from fall through spring at both Shawnee Mission, Heritage Park and Kill Creek Park lakes. Daily creel and length limits (PDF) are available for various fishing locations.

Permits

JCPRD fishing, boating and trout permits, and Kansas fishing licenses are available for purchase at the Shawnee Mission Park Visitor Services, as well as the Johnson County locations of Dick’s Sporting Goods, Wal-Mart, and Bass Pro Shop. Visit our permits page for more information.

Research

JCPRD is dedicated to providing quality fishing opportunities to the public through active research. JCPRD employees interview anglers and create weekly fishing reports (PDF) throughout the season in an effort to increase angler success. Creel studies and analysis help JCPRD better understand fishing pressure and success rates on its lakes. 

The public may be approached by a clerk asking for basic angling information from March to October at any lake. Ongoing population surveys collect data on size and fish growth, allowing JCPRD to set adequate creel limits.

Habitat Enhancement

Protecting water quality is key to providing outstanding fishing. Construction projects (PDF) occur throughout JCPRD to reduce sediment load and pollutants with retention ponds and wetlands. Bodies of water receive both large and small fish habitat enhancements including recycled Christmas trees, PVC structure, and aquatic vegetation management.

Rearing Ponds

Rearing ponds located below the dam at Shawnee Mission Park are designed to cost-effectively grow fingerling channel catfish for stocking in the fall. Quality vendors are used to stock sport and game fish including rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and red eared sunfish.

Aquatic Nuisance Species

Invasive aquatic plants and animals pose a serious threat to JCPRD's lakes and others throughout the region. Signage (JPG) has been placed at all boat ramps in an effort to educate the public regarding the negative impact these species can have on recreational opportunities.
