Volunteer Opportunities

Listed below is a sampling of the many other volunteer opportunities available in District parks, programs and facilities. For information on these opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 913-826-3131.

• 50 Plus Centers Assistants: Centers near Gardner, Overland Park, Roeland Park and Shawnee offer programs and leisure activities for the 50 Plus population. Assistance is needed in the office, to instruct classes, and to help with special events. Volunteer commitments are flexible and can range from on call/as need to set weekly schedules. • Duathlon and Triathlon: Annual events at Heritage Park and Shawnee Mission Park. Volunteers to assist with bike counting, passing out water, number assigning and more. To apply, see Volunteer Coordinator contact information above.
• Eagle Scout Project: JCPRD welcomes and encourages project proposals where a scout has identified a need in a park and presents a proposal. Please spend time in a JCPRD park or facility and think about a project that will make an area more accessible to the public or more valuable to wildlife.
• Early Education and Out of School Time: Opportunities with flexible hours are available at summer camps, early education centers, Natureplay preschool, and out of school time programs in DeSoto, Gardner, Olathe and Shawnee Mission school districts. Minimum age requirement is 14. All volunteer applicants must agree to submit to KBI background check prior to placement. To apply, see Volunteer Coordinator contact information above.
• Ernie Miller Amphitheater Programs: The District presents special nature programs designed to be both educational and entertaining. Volunteers are needed to assist in setup, greeting visitors, collecting fees, and take-down. To apply, see Volunteer Coordinator contact information above.
• Ernie Miller Park: The volunteer program is open to individuals age 18 or older who are interested in natural and cultural history of Johnson County. Volunteers at the nature center assist in all facets of running the center. Giving a minimum of 8 hours a month, volunteers work indoors or out, with the public or behind the scenes. They provide manpower at special events throughout the year, assist the public visiting the nature center, and have a special spirit of teamwork to get the job done. • Fine and Performing Arts: Do you have a creative passion that you would love to share with others? The JCPRD Fine Arts Department is always interested in volunteer instructors for art, dance, music, theater, or special interest classes for preschoolers, youths, or adults. Opportunities are also available during the spring and summer months to help prepare for camps or to volunteer at one of our arts or theater camps in Roeland Park or Shawnee. Also, on the third Saturday in May, JCPRD organizes the annual Turkey Creek Arts and Craft Festival at Antioch Park. Volunteers are needed to help set up and tear down the event. • Golf Course Marshals: Immediate openings available at Tomahawk Hills Golf Course. Marshals assist patrons with tee-off times, rules and regulations. To apply contact Jay Lispi at (913) 631-8000 for more details.
• Johnson County Museum: Volunteer opportunities are available to individuals 16 and older to help with programming, greeting visitors, serving as docents, and helping in the KidScape experience, a special gallery for kids to learn about history. To apply, complete an application.
• Kansas City Corporate Challenge: An annual event cosponsored by area corporations, held at various locations during June. Volunteers needed to assist in conducting all events, including swim meet, 5K run, duathlon, triathlon, football throw, and many other events. • Natural Resources: Become a bluebird monitor, land steward, or Kansas City Wildlands volunteer.
• Park Maintenance Workers: Help is needed throughout the year with miscellaneous tasks that help keep the parks clean and beautiful. Duties include: general cleaning, painting, trail maintenance, maintenance of flower beds (especially someone with specialized experience and interest in the care of rose bushes). • Special Populations: Volunteer opportunities exist for persons with a strong desire to learn and to help others succeed. Special Olympics relies heavily on volunteers for many different sporting events. Assistant coaches are needed during practice times. Each sport has a minimum of ten practices. • Streamway Park Trails: Volunteers needed to help with the general maintenance of different portions of the trail. Duties could include picking up trash, painting, and trail maintenance. To apply, see Volunteer Coordinator contact information above.
• The Theater in the Park: The volunteer program is open to individuals of all ages who are interested in the varied aspects of the theatrical arts. Age limits apply to some opportunities. Volunteers work primarily outdoors, with the public, or behind the scenes. They provide manpower at productions and special events throughout the year, assist the public, serve as parking attendants, and have a special spirit of teamwork to get the job done.
