Safety Training for Swim Coaches
This Safety Training for Swim Coaches course teaches those involved in competitive swimming how to help maintain a comfortable and safe environment for swimmers, prevent accidents and emergencies and respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land.
This course has two components including American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED and American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches. Each component is given in a blended learning format where participants will complete an online portion of the course with an online exam and complete an in-person portion of the course.
Participants should come to the in-person portion course with the following:
- American Red Cross: Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED online portion completion certificate.
- American Red Cross: Safety Training for Swim Coaches online portion completion certificate.
- Participants should be ready for both in-water and out of water activities.
Prerequisites
- Participants must be a minimum of 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
- Must be comfortable in chest-deep water.
ADULT & PEDIATRIC CPR/AED CERTIFICATION
The Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED course incorporates the latest science and teaches students how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age - adults (about 12 years and older) and pediatric (infants and children up to 2 years of age).
Step 1: Online
After registering for the course, participants will receive a link to the web-based American Red Cross: Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED course. Participants must complete the online portion and provide the successful completion certificate to instructor to participate in the in-person portion of the course.
Step 2: In-Person
All participants will use the skills obtained through the online portion of the course to complete an in-person test out of all skills related to Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED on scheduled in-person date.
If the participant has any of the following certifications through the American Red Cross, the participant may show their current certification card to the instructor and the participant does not have to complete the online or in-person portions of the CPR/AED portion of the course.

SAFETY TRAINING FOR SWIM COACHES
During this portion of the course, participants will be introduced to the below learning objectives of the course.
- Understand the guidelines for responsible coaching and professional conduct, and the legal responsibilities of a professional coach.
- Understand the coach's responsibility for providing a safe and positive sport environment, including raising awareness of, and actively working to prevent, abuse in the sport.
- Understand the safety considerations that are paramount in planning athlete training and swim practice in pools, on land, or in open water situations.
- Understand the safety rules and guidelines that must be followed when teaching an practicing turns and entries.
- Understand coach's rules in emergency planning and response.
- Learn how to recognize and respond to common first aid emergencies.
- Demonstrate how to perform basic assists to a swimmer in distress.
Step 1: Online
After registering for the course, participants will receive a link to the web-based American Red Cross: Safety Training for Swim Coaches course. Participants must complete the online portion and provide successful completion certificate to the instructor to participate in the in-person portion of the course.
Step 2: In-Water Skill Verification

- Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
- Location: Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center
Participants must successfully demonstrate all in-water skills required for course.
If participant has any of the following certifications through the American Red Cross, participant may show their current certification card to instructor and participant does not have to complete the In-Water Skill Verification portion of the course.
