The Johnson County Park & Recreation District is currently negotiating a property exchange with the Blue Valley School District that would transfer ownership of the Stanley Nature Park property in exchange for two separate properties totaling 60.8 acres located in the Camp Branch Creek watershed.
The proposed property exchange is consistent with MAP
2020, the master action plan the Board of Park and Recreation
Commissioners approved in 2001. The future parkland
JCPRD would receive in the proposed exchange would complement
the Camp Branch Creek and Blue River streamway parks that
are planned for southeast Johnson County.
A summary of the school district's expressed need and intended
use for the park property is available at www.bluevalleyK12.org.
A Natural
Resource Assessment of all three properties was completed
by Vireo (formerly Patti Banks Associates) of Kansas City,
Missouri, and was presented to the board at its regular monthly
meeting on January 12. The board held a Special Board
Meeting and a Public Hearing on February 28 to review and
take public comments on the proposed exchange and Vireo's
assessment of the properties.
At the end of the Special Board Meeting, the board approved a motion to enter into an Agreement for Exchange of Recreational Property with the school district for the exchange of the Stanley Nature Park property for two separate properties in Stilwell known as the Brown/Slegman property located at the southeast corner of 175th and Nall, and the Baum property located at 16900 Mission Road.
The agreement is subject to receiving all required approvals or consents required for the exchange under any applicable authority. As required by statute, the exchange was approved by the Board of County Commissioners on April 12. It is now subject to review and approval by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, and the National Park Service.
Updates on the status of the proposed exchange will be made available on this site as information becomes available.
