Children's Services of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers a number of services aimed at infants through school-age youth. Our staff of youth specialists administrates programs in the following areas: school-age care and enrichment, early childhood development centers and summer camps.

AMENITIES
School Age Care and Enrichment (ages K-6)
JCPRD provides a wonderful child care service for working families who have children, kindergarten through sixth grade. This service is located on-site in specific Shawnee Mission, DeSoto and Gardner-Edgerton Elementary schools.

Before School Care
  • Shawnee Mission School Sites - Care is available from 7am-8am
  • Desoto School Site - Care is available from 7am-8:45am
  • Gardner 7am - 8:25am

Trained staff provides a fun and relaxed atmosphere by assisting children with any unfinished homework, engaging children in activities, and encouraging socialization. A morning snack is provided.

Kindergarten Enrichment
  • Desoto School Site - Care is available from 9:50-11:55am and/or 12:50-3:45pm
  • Gardner School Site - Care is available from 11:20-3:20am

The enrichment program features activities that reinforce academic and social development. The qualified staff maintain an enjoyable and comfortable learning environment. Letter recognition, decision making, socialization, group and individual games, creative arts, field trips and other events make this a wonderful learning experience. An AM snack is available for the early group and lunch through the school is available for the PM group.

Afterschool Care
  • Shawnee Mission School Sites - Care is available from 3-6pm
  • Desoto School Site - Care is available from 3:50-6pm
  • Gardner School Site - Care is available from 3:20-6pm

This program is an opportunity for kids to enhance their socialization and physical skills, and provides a quiet place to do homework. Experienced staff present a rewarding setting through recreational games, board games to increase social skills and turn taking, crafts to improve creativity and homework time to encourage discipline and responsibility.

Children Services Required Forms

Early Childhood Development Centers (ages 3-5 years old)
Our centers are fully licensed by the State of Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Our Early Education Center is open from 7am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Each center features a morning preschool component, extended programming for the working parent, daily hot lunch, early afternoon quiet period, and late afternoon creative arts and socialization activities. Our program focuses on self-awareness, motor development, self-selected activity, pre-academic skills, and creative arts along with field trips, classroom visitors, and special events. We will be equipped with a variety of learning centers that encourage the young child to explore and understand his/her environment. Through the gentle guidance of our caring and experienced teachers, each child is able to achieve realistic goals specific to individual needs.

Preschool Enrichment Programs (Ages 3-5 years old)
Preschool enrichment programs focus on giving young children opportunities to explore and discover their creativity through exposure to a variety of arts media. Program activities focus on the creative process and shift emphasis away from the product of the experience. Enrichment themes integrate visual, tactile and auditory experiences that capture interest and fuel the curiosity of young children.

Children's Services Summer Camp (Ages 3-13 years old)
Johnson County Park and Recreation District is home to many different summer camps. Day camps are held in schools, parks and other community facilities. Camps are directed by highly qualified individuals who possess specialty certifications, and all camps are fully licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Each day offers a new variety of activities, including socialization, group games, sports, creative arts, special events, weekly swimming and field trips. These camps include Crossroad Camps & Summer Escapades.
