Be Aware of Your Surroundings
There are many multi-use trails in District parks, and many
of them offer secluded and scenic areas. While using the trails,
it is important to remember that the parks receive over six
million visitations each year, so it is not unusual to encounter
other people, even in seemingly secluded areas.
Always Be Alert
If you see anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable,
trust your instincts and go the other way. Better yet, share
your outdoor experience by walking with friends or family
members and report anything you feel is suspicious to the
park police.
Burglars Are Park Users, Too
Burglars use parks to prey on those who are using
the park legitimately. Remember to lock your car and do not
leave valuables in the passenger compartment. Auto burglars
sometimes frequent park areas because they know that people
hiking, fishing, boating and other park users may be a considerable
distance away from their cars for extended periods of time.
Park Tips To Avoid Car Theft:
- Never leave your car running unattended
- Never leave any keys in the car or ignition or
in hide-a-key boxes
- Always roll up your windows and lock the car
- Never leave valuables in plain view, even if car
is locked.
Place all valuables in trunk.
- Always park in well-lighted areas, when possible
- Install a mechanical device that locks the steering
wheel, column, or brakes
- Investigate the purchase of a vehicle theft tracking/security
system
- Never leave personal identification documents,
vehicle title, or credit cards
in vehicle
- If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the Park
Police immediately
