Current Project - Inclusive Playground: Stillwell Community ParkThe Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD) is excited to announce that we are developing our first inclusive playgrounds. In the fall of 2017, we began planning for the construction of one playground in Stilwell Community Park and another in Shawnee Mission Park.
Inclusive playgrounds enable all children to play together without physical or social barriers. These types of playgrounds are new to the JCPRD system, but are not to the KC metro area. Each of our playgrounds will have a unique design and offer a new play experience that the children, parents, and caregivers in Johnson County will enjoy again and again.
It is essential that the playground designs reflect community needs, so we have organized a Steering Committee made up of a wide range of Johnson County stakeholders, including parents, faith-based institutions, advocacy groups, public institutions and agencies, community organizations, and JCPRD officials and staff. The group gathered for the first time in early August as part of a two-day, intensive design workshop that the Vireo landscape architecture, planning, and design consultant firm led.
The Steering Committee identified goals, issues to remember, and other factors as they developed playground concepts. They also discussed preferred play experiences, surfaces, materials, equipment, and more.
JCPRD anticipates construction of the inclusive playgrounds at Stilwell Community Park and Shawnee Mission Park to occur during the fall of 2018. For more information, contact the JCPRD Planning and Development Manager, Cliff Middleton,at 913-826-3425 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
