|Shawnee Mission Park Lake Plans to be discussed during April 25 Public Open House|
Planned lake restoration and wetland improvements to Shawnee Mission Park Lake scheduled to begin later this year will be the subject of an informational public open house set from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 25 at the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's Administration Building, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa.
The April 25 meeting will be conducted by representatives of Olsson Associates, the District's consulting engineers for this project. The meeting will feature exhibits and plans for the improvements and opportunities for one-on-one discussions with consultants and representatives of agencies involved in the project, including the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program, the City of Lenexa, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the Park District. No formal presentation is planned during the open house.
"We are working to restore and protect water quality and aquatic habitat at Shawnee Mission Lake, now and for the future," said Tony Stanton of Olsson Associates. "Recent upstream development has delivered a large amount of sediment to the upper portions of the lake, which has reduced water depths by as much as ten feet. This has impacted water quality, fish habitat and boater access. The proposed wetland and lake restoration enhancements, along with other upstream improvements coordinated with the City of Lenexa and the Park District, will ensure the lake remains a high quality, enjoyable destination for park patrons.”
Improvement plans call for reducing the water level in Shawnee Mission Park Lake by up to 10 feet beginning July 9, 2007. The drawdown is required to allow dredging of the lake to remove accumulated silt and will also facilitate the construction of the wetlands. The vegetated wetlands and a small planned pool will work together to trap sediments and
These projects will impact access to the lake for all water-based recreation activities including swimming, boating, and fishing, and will also alter the view from a number of park shelters. The park's beach and marina operations have announced plans to have shorter seasons this year, which will both conclude in mid-July when lake levels become too low for those activities. Lake levels are expected to remain low until at least late spring 2008. Both the refilling the lake and completion of the work will be especially weather-dependant. The lake projects will not affect the 23rd annual Shawnee Mission Triathlon, which will take place on July 8.
Since before the first of the year, those purchasing District fishing permits have been notified of the lake drawdown plans and information on the improvement plans was provided in the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's Spring Activities catalog. More information on the projects can be found at www.jcprd.com/pages/smp.cfm.
The Shawnee Mission Park Lake renovation projects are part of the District's 20-year Master Action Plan, MAP 2020, which includes renovations to existing District parks as well as acquisition of additional park land. Shawnee Mission Park is located in Shawnee and Lenexa, with a main entrance at 7900 Renner Road.
