|JCPRD 2007 Summer Day Camp Offerings - Part II|
Editor’s Note: because of the number of summer camps being offered this year, we’ve listed this summary of 2007 summer camps in two parts. Please be sure to see Part I as well., which includes most of our full-day camps, as well as our nature and science-themed camps.
Also being offered are two Monday through Friday Mad Science camps for youth ages 7-12. Both involve five 6-hour sessions exploring a variety of fun subjects. BIRDS AND BEASTS, CRAZY CHEMISTRY, JUNIOR ENGINEERS, MACHINE MANIA & SHUTTERBUGS will take place beginning July 30. Participants will explore the worlds of birds and insects, mix and brew chemicals, investigate the structural engineering of structures such as geodesic domes and bridges, discover how useful simple machines can be, and learn how a camera and our eyes work. EARTH AWARENESS, MAD MESSAGES, NATURE, SCIENCE OF SPORTS & SPACE DAY will take place beginning Aug. 6. Participants will gain a greater understanding of water pollution and solar energy, create their own codes for sending secret messages, explore the animal kingdom and life cycles, learn why we move the way we do, and discover how astronauts live and work in space. For either of these programs, the per-person cost is $235 for Johnson County residents or $259 for nonresidents.
SUMMER PRESCHOOL CAMP is for ages 3 -5. Each week children will enjoy a variety of learning opportunities such as dramatic play, creative arts, cooking, field trips, and water/pool play based around one of eight weekly themes. Camp sessions begin weekly from June 4 through July 30. The cost for one week of five 3-hour sessions is $45 for Johnson County residents or $50 for nonresidents.
FABULOUS FABLES CAMP is for ages 5-8. This program will introduce young thespians to drama using familiar fables filled with characters they know. This camp consists of five 90-minute sessions on Monday through Friday beginning June 4. The cost is $65 for Johnson County residents or $72 for nonresidents. A theater program for ages 4-6 is called LITTLE STARS CAMP. First-time actors can have fun learning about creative movement, dance, music, and mime. This program consists of five 60-minute sessions offered Monday through Friday beginning June 11. The cost is $55 for Johnson County residents or $61 for nonresidents.
DISCOVERY ART CAMPS provide imaginative fun for children ages 9-12 and encourage exploration of individual creativity through drawing, painting, design, clay, and crafts. This camp consists of five 2½-hour sessions and is offered Monday through Friday beginning June 11 when the theme is "Comic Book Heroes" and again on June 18, when the theme is "Nature, Flowers & Landscapes." The cost is $75 for Johnson County residents or $83 for nonresidents.
In AMERICAN GIRL CAMP for ages 7-10, participants will explore the past and find out what life was like during the times of American Girl characters from the popular book and doll series. Participants will enjoy stories and craft projects from each time period and other hands-on projects. This program is offered five times on Monday through Thursday beginning June 11 and 18, and July 9, 23, and 31. The cost for four 90-minute sessions is $55 for Johnson County residents or $61 for nonresidents.
DINOSAUR DISCOVERY CAMP for ages 6-9 and PIRATE TREASURE HUNT CAMP for ages 7-10 are themed art camps which are new for 2007. Dinosaur camp participants will explore the world of dinosaurs by learning about the prehistoric animals, pretending to be paleontologists digging for their bones, and by creating clay dinosaurs, murals, masks and other art projects. This camp is offered Monday through Thursday beginning June 25. The cost for four 60-minute sessions is $38 for Johnson County residents or $42 for nonresidents. In the other new program, young buccaneers will follow a map to hidden treasure, make their own treasure chest, flag, and eye patch, and hear pirate-themed stories. This camp is offered Monday through Wednesday beginning June 11. The cost for three 60-minute sessions is $30 for Johnson County residents or $38 for nonresidents.
Also offered are six Monday through Thursday dance camps for children up to age 7. MOMMY/DADDY & ME DANCE CAMP, for ages 18 months to 2 years with a parent, is designed to introduce young children to music and movement. This program is offered seven times: June 18, and July 9, 16 and 23 and Aug. 6, 13, and 20. The cost for four 45-minute lessons is $40 per child and adult for Johnson County residents or $44 for nonresidents. The popular ACTION HERO DANCE CAMP is for ages 3 through 6. Participants will build coordination and develop social skills as they jump as high as tall buildings, run as fast as the wind, and crawl like spiders. This program is offered five times: June 18, July 9 and 23, and Aug. 6 and 20. The cost for four 50-minute lessons is $40 per child for Johnson County residents or $44 for nonresidents. The remaining four dance camps are for ages 3-6 and require tap and ballet shoes. All four involve four 50-minute sessions and cost $45 per person for Johnson County residents or $50 per person for nonresidents. DANCING WITH DISNEY CAMP I will involve tap, ballet, and tumbling to the beat of various Disney songs. This camp is offered beginning June 18, and July 9 and 16. DANCING WITH DISNEY CAMP II is for those who have completed Dancing With Disney I and will involve learning routines to more great Disney songs. This camp is offered beginning July 23 and Aug. 6 and 13. DANCING WITH DISNEY CAMP III represents the next level for those who have completed the first two programs and still want to dance to more great Disney tunes. This camp is offered beginning Aug. 20. LITTLE PRINCESS BALLET CAMP will let participants learn basic ballet steps and use costumes while they dance out characters from classic ballet fairy tales. Camp sessions for this program begin June 18, July 9, 16, and 23, and Aug. 6, 13, and 20.
In IRISH DANCE CAMP for ages 8-12, participants will learn the basic moves to music of the Emerald Isle. This high-energy camp is for both boys and girls and is offered on Monday through Friday beginning June 18. The cost for five 60-minute sessions is $48 for Johnson County residents or $53 for nonresidents.
New for 2007 are three cheerleading and gymnastics programs. CHEERLEADING JUMPS & TUMBLING TRICKS is for ages 6-10. Designed as a good technique builder for those wishing to try out for cheerleading, this program will concentrate on the tumbling mats, while also working with poms. This camp is offered Monday through Thursday and will begin on Aug. 6 and again on Aug. 20. BACKHANDSPRING CAMP for ages 6-12 will focus solely on this one technique and is offered Monday through Thursday beginning Aug. 6 and again on Aug. 20. BEGINNING TUMBLING CAMP is for ages 6-10 and will cover forward and backward rolls, straddle rolls, back bends, handstands and more. This camp is offered beginning June 18, July 9 and 23, and Aug. 6 and 20. . For any one of these camps, the cost for four 50-minute sessions is $45 for Johnson County residents or $50 for nonresidents.
NEW HORIZONS CAMP FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS is designed for special needs students between the ages of 6 and 18. Now in its 38th year, this program provides quality summer day camp experiences including daily instructional swims, weekly field trips, sports, games, fitness, creative arts, cooking, and special events. Nine weeks of 8-hour daily programs begin June 4. The weekly cost is $95 for Johnson County residents or $104 for nonresidents.
