Did you know: The first public monument in the Kansas City area erected to honor veterans of the Vietnam War is located in Antioch Park?
POSTED: 03/07/2002

The monument was first dedicated on Nov. 11, 1974 and is located under the flagpole at Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam. The original monument consisted of a marble block with a bronze plaque containing the names of Johnson County servicemen killed or thought to be missing during the Vietnam Conflict. In May 1998, a major renovation of the monument was completed by renowned landscape and concrete sculptor Leon Licktieg of Greeley, himself a holder of the Vietnam Service Medal for his Navel service in Thailand during the Vietnam War. The new memorial plaza was rededicated on May 25, 1998 and consists of a sculpted concrete overlay incorporating symbols associated with the Vietnam conflict.
