Shawnee Mission Park Marina, Accessible Fishing Pier Currently Undergoing Major Renovations
POSTED: 12/06/2006

Work on major renovation projects near the Shawnee Mission Park Marina is scheduled to begin Dec. 11 and is expected to make the Accessible Fishing Pier unavailable for public use until about March 1 and the marina unavailable until about May 1.

Marina repairs will involve: replacement of deteriorated structural members; updating the stair between the upper and lower levels to meet current design and code requirements; reroofing the structure, repainting; improvements to make restrooms meet the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA); and replacement of the existing deck and guardrails. The fishing pier, which was built in 1995 and which is located on the north side of the lake near the dam, will be redecked with a synthetic material and will get a new ADA-compliant guardrail.

Despite the renovations to the marina, which was originally designed in 1967, the structure will continue to look largely as it does now, said Park Planner II Jim Wilson.

"It will still have the same form it does today," Wilson said. "It's kind of an icon. We talked about changing it, but it's got that ship's prow type-look and it's very unique. We didn't want to rebuild it, we wanted to renovate it."

The contractor for this project is US General Contractors of Overland Park. The contract value for the marina work is $221,144, while contract value for the ADA pier is $46,382. The total project timeline is about 120 days.

The deck and marina improvements are being completed in advance of an anticipated reduction of up to 10 feet in the water level of Shawnee Mission Park Lake scheduled to begin in mid-July 2007. The drawdown is required to allow dredging of the lake to remove accumulated silt and will also facilitate a wetlands construction project at the lake's east end and dam improvements at the west end.

These renovation projects are part of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's 20-year Master Action Plan, MAP 2020, which includes renovations to existing District parks as well as acquisition of additional park land. Shawnee Mission Park is located in Shawnee and Lenexa, with a main entrance at 7900 Renner Road.
