|Special Events Develops New Picnic Program|
People who are having picnics for large groups and corporations can now call the Johnson County Park and Recreation District and have all their party planning done in one phone call.
The program is called Group and Corporate Picnics and is being developed by JCPRD Special Events staff members Recreation Specialist Jill Leiker and Recreation Assistant Keri Sanborn.
"Everybody's been a part of a committee where you come up with a good idea and all of a sudden, you're the chair," Leiker said. "For that person that's been put in charge, this gives them the chance to just make one phone call."
"The day of the picnic, we take care of everything, so that person doesn't have to be running around so they can actually sit down and enjoy it just like everybody else," Sanborn added.
The service is aimed primarily at picnics for 50 or more and will include catering, equipment such as tents, tables and chairs, and additional special items like moon walks.
"They could be family reunions, they could be wedding parties, they could be corporations, so we're not limited," Sanborn said.
Initially, the program will be offered at larger shelters at Shawnee Mission, Heritage and Antioch parks. Leiker and Sanborn said they hope to develop about five packages including "picnic food" offerings ranging from bratwurst to steaks. Some of the packages will also utilize existing facilities and programs such as the Shawnee Mission Park beach and summer musicals at The Theatre in the Park. Leiker and Sanborn said they hope to have a brochure for the new service by Feb. 1.
"So this whole thing is prefaced by the fact that there is a need out there," she said.
The staff members said they plan to contact people who have already reserved shelters for large picnics to let them know the District is now offering this service.
