La Grande Birding Fiesta is April 29 at Ernie Miller Nature Center
POSTED: 04/05/2006
A south-of-the-border fiesta to welcome back hummingbirds, orioles, warblers, and other feathered friends after their winter vacation in Latin America is the theme of a special event scheduled in late April at the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's Ernie Miller Nature Center in Olathe.

Now in its third year, this free event is called the La Grande Birding Fiesta and is for ages six and older with a parent. This event is being held in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks' Outdoor Kansas for Kids Day (OKKids) and will include activities appropriate for school-age children and beginning bird watchers.

Planned activities include: door prizes and giveaways; guided hikes through Ernie Miller Park where participants can learn the basics of bird watching; bird-related information booths; children's activity stations; live birds of prey; "bird bingo," and an opportunity to make a bird feeder from recycled materials. In the event of rain, booths and stations will be moved indoors.

This program will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas-7 Highway, Olathe. For more information , contact Park Naturalist Chris Pistole at the Nature Center at (913) 764-8580 ext. 23.

Outdoor Kansas for Kids Day provides an opportunity for children across Kansas to experience various outdoor activities. For many, it will be an introduction to the beauty and enjoyment of the outdoors. For others, it will be a reawakening or reinforcing of their outdoor interests. In 2005, more than 15,000 people across the state participated in OKKids events. Bass Pro Shops and Capital Federal Savings are statewide corporate donors for the event and will help in providing funds for door prizes and giveaways Other local sponsors are: Wild Birds Unlimited, Wild Oats Community Markets, and the Johnson County Master Gardeners.
