|Ernie Miller Nature Center Now Open for Walk-In Visitors on Mondays|
For the first time in its more than 20 years of operation, the Ernie Miller Nature Center is now open to the public on Mondays. The Monday hours began March 13 and are the result of a job-sharing arrangement involving a newly-restructured Community Relations Assistant position. The new assistant will be at the nature center on Mondays and will be based at the Shawnee Mission Park Administration Offices for the rest of the workweek.
"It's a wonderful sharing of resources and will greatly assist us on Mondays," said Outdoor Education Manager Bill McGowan. "This position is going to be a great asset in assisting nature center operations"
He added that this will be especially helpful in handling Monday phone calls and in the summer for camp check-in.
Like many other operations that are open on weekends, the nature center has always been closed to walk-in visitors on Mondays, but staff still present programs to school and other groups on this day, McGowan said.
The Ernie Miller Nature Center opened in 1985 and is located at 909 North Kansas 7 Highway in Olathe. It serves as the focal point of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s environmental, cultural and historical education programming for all ages. The center is staffed by environmental interpreters and park rangers from the District’s Park Safety and Interpretive Division.
