Running 101 and 202 Classes Offered for Adults Beginning March 9
POSTED: 02/15/2006
Have an interest in running but don't know how to get started or to progress to the next level? Two classes offered by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District can help.

The classes are called Running 101 and Running 202 and are both instructed by ACSM-certified Health and Fitness Instructor Janna Meyer for ages 14 and older. Both classes meet at 6 p.m. Thursday beginning March 9 in Room 101 at Shawnee Mission West High School, 8800 West 85th St., Overland Park. Neither program will meet on March 16. Search for the keyword "running" to find these programs in the JCPRD's Activities Catalog and online listings.

Running 101 is an eight-week training course which will prepare participants for a 5K as well as for a lifetime of running. Class will cover how to progress at one's own pace, avoid injury, select proper shoes and attire, and much more. Students can "graduate" by completing a Kansas City area 5K. The cost for six 90-minute sessions is $59 for Johnson County residents or $65 for nonresidents.

Running 202 is a new program intended to serve as a half-marathon training group. This 10-week training course will help participants push their running distance and performance. Running 101 is not a prerequisite for the program, although participants should be prepared to complete three miles comfortably with consistent weekly mileage of 10 miles per week. Students in Running 202 will cover the information from Running 101, plus distance-specific training techniques and principles. Students can "graduate" by completing a Kansas City area half marathon the first Sunday in June. The cost for ten 90-minute sessions is $89 for Johnson County residents or $98 for nonresidents.

The JCPRD's ACTIVITIES catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pick-up at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359 VOICE or (913) 831-3342 TDD. To register online and for updated program listings, see the District's website at
