50 Plus hike at Powell Gardens on June 19 is a chance to see Nature Connects Exhibit
POSTED: 05/22/2013

Powell Gardens is the destination for a hike being planned by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park and Recreation District on Wednesday, June 19.

Participants will visit Powell Gardens near Kingsville, Mo., and see this year's featured exhibit, Nature Connects, which aims to show that "just as Lego® bricks connect together to create something fun, colorful and intricate, so does nature."

The exhibit aims to illustrate that all living things on earth rely on a complex and amazing network and celebrate those connections through an art exhibit sure to appeal to all ages! Built from nearly 500,000 LEGO® bricks, the Nature Connects exhibit features 27 larger-than-life sculptures set in 14 scenes built by New York artist Sean Kenney. Participants can walk under an eight-foot tall hummingbird, pose beside a seven-foot rose, and go nose-to-nose with a five-foot butterfly.

To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 plus and then under nature & outdoors. In the printed catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “hiking.”

This Powell Gardens Hike will leave from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, at 9 a.m. The cost for one five-hour outing, including transportation, is $21 per person for Johnson County residents or $23 for nonresidents. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch for a picnic near the entrance to the gardens following the hike.

While the JCPRD's 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the District's Registration Department at (913) 831-3359, and if space is available without forfeiting the place of a person over 50, their registration can be taken.

The JCPRD's Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, visit the District's website at www.jcprd.com.
