|New Movies in the Park program launches on June 11 with “Mary Poppins”|
“Mary Poppins” and “Bedknobs & Broomsticks” are the first two films which will be shown as part of a new Movies in the Park program being launched at the Johnson County Park & Recreation District’s The Theatre in the Park in June.
Through this program, a variety of films will be shown on a 40-foot screen on the theatre stage on eight nights of the summer when musical productions are not scheduled. Family favorite movies will run on every other Tuesday during the theatre’s regular season, and then switch to Saturday nights after the first week of August and present classic films, often as double- and triple-features. All films will begin at 8:30 p.m. and the cost is $1 per person.
“The Theatre facility is such an enjoyable place for families to hang out, we wanted to give them even more chances to do so,” said Producing Artistic Director Tim Bair. “It’s going to be a drive-in, sit-in and this is going to introduce a whole new audience to our theatre.”
To kick off this program, “Mary Poppins” will be shown on June 11, and “Bedknobs & Broomsticks” will be shown on June 25.
Other movie nights in the series include: July 9, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang;” July 23, “The Lion King;” Aug. 6, “Singin’ in the Rain;” Aug. 17, a “Jurassic Park” double feature including “Jurassic Park” and “The Lost World;” Aug. 24 a “Lord of the Rings” triple feature including “The Fellowship of the Rings,” “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King” (which will go until 6:20 a.m. the next morning); and conclude on Aug. 31 with a James Bond double feature including “Goldfinger” and “the Spy Who Loved Me.”
Movies in the Park are being presented by Surewest, while the first five films of the series are sponsored by Capital Federal®.
The Theatre in the Park is located north of the main entrance to Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road in Shawnee.
