Northernmost Portion of Mill Creek Streamway Park Remains Closed for Repairs
POSTED: 11/23/2005

A portion of a popular hiking and biking trail which was closed in late 2005 for repairs will remain closed until further notice.

Closed is a 1.5-mile portion of the Mill Creek Streamway Park's Gary L. Haller Trail stretching from Wilder Road in Shawnee north to Nelson Island in the Kansas River. This portion was closed and fenced off after the bank supporting a small section of trail located under the railroad bridge which is parallel to the Wilder Road bridge over Mill Creek was damaged by a storm earlier this year.

Bank stabilization efforts were expected to begin in earlier December. The temporary closure effectively cuts off access to Nelson Island, the only publicly-accessible island in the Kansas River in the metropolitan area, which first opened in 1996.

Still open are 15.5 miles of the Gary L. Haller Trail stretching south from the access point at 4731 Wilder Road to 119th and Northgate Road east of Woodland Avenue in Olathe. For more information, call (913) 438-7275 or (913) 831-3359.
