Opening Ceremonies for Second Annual Kansas City Senior Games Set for Sept. 15 At Shawnee Mission Park’s Shelter #8
Athletes' families, as well as friends and the general public, are invited to bring a picnic and lawn chairs and enjoy music and a walk when opening ceremonies for the second-annual Kansas City Senior Games take place on Sept. 15 at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa.
A free event, the opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Park's Shelter 8 located on the southwest side of the lake. In addition to the lighting of a torch, the event will include music and a walk along a portion of the nearby Mill Creek Streamway Park. Participating athletes who wish to do so can also pick up their packets at this event.
Senior Games competitions will take place from Friday, Sept. 16 through Monday, Sept. 19 at locations ranging from Olathe to Independence. New events for 2005 are: tennis doubles, race walking, bridge, softball, and swimming. Returning events are: single and team bowling; billiards; golf; horseshoes; shuffleboard; Tennis singles; and the 5 kilometer run.
The registration deadline for this year’s games was Aug. 26, but some spaces may be available for the usual activities fees, which vary according to event, plus a $5 late registration fee. The local senior games are being presented by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District's 50 Plus Department and are Olympic-style competitions meant to promote health and wellness.
