|New Great Outdoor Challenge to Take Place Sept. 17|
A new program being offered as part of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's 50th anniversary celebration promises to offer adventure, challenge, and excitement.
The event is called the Great Outdoor Challenge and is for adults 18 and older. For this event, teams of two will run a course through the diverse terrain of Shawnee Mission Park. Unlike other athletic and adventure races, teams will be required to complete 13 challenges along the way.
Park Naturalist Molly Postlewait, who is one of the organizers of this event, said this will not be just a traditional challenge competition and will involve many skills and strategies. Postlewait said she didn't want to give away too much, but revealed one of the challenges will involve canoeing. She added that competitors of all different athletic abilities are encouraged to sign up and that the aspect of teamwork will be as important as athletic ability.
The course is approximately five miles and competitors can expect to get muddy, she added. The cost for this four-hour event is $24 per two-member team and only the team captain should register.
Start time will be 8 a.m. with check-in at 7 a.m. For safety considerations, all participants must complete medical and liability releases during a mandatory pre-race meeting which will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 North Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe.
