|KC Wildlands Sets Sept. 10 Workday at Shawnee Mission Park|
A Kansas City WildLands workday has been scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon.on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee.
Interested parties are invited to assist with land stewardship in the form of removal of woody growth from a four-acre prairie remnant located near Ogg Road, on the north side of the lake. The aim of this workday is remove invasive plants that threaten to choke out sun-loving prairie plants.
Volunteers are advised to dress for the weather. KC Wildlands will have some tools on-site, but participants are invited to bring their own loppers or saws as well.
A recently-completed plant inventory strengthened park officials' belief that out of Shawnee Mission Park's more than 1,200 total acres, the greatest plant diversity occurs at the Ogg Road prairie. The inventory found 214 species. With the assistance of KC WildLands, which has conducted at least one workday at the site each year since the local conservation coalition was initiated in 2001, focused prairie management has been established at the site.
