|Family Canoe and Kayak Lessons Offered on July 12 & 13|
Separate single-session lessons introducing participants to the sports of flatwater kayaking and canoeing are planned on consecutive nights in mid-July at Shawnee Mission Park.
The Johnson County Park and Recreation District is offering Family Canoe Lessons on July 12 and Family Kayak Lessons on July 13. Both programs begin at 6 p.m. at the Shawnee Mission Park boat ramp, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee. The cost for either is $12 per person for Johnson County residents or $14 per person for nonresidents. The canoe session will last 3 hours, while the kayaking session will last 2.5 hours. Preregistration is required. Search for the keyword "boating" to find these programs in the JCPRD's Activities Catalog and online listings.
Both programs are for ages 10 and up with an adult and are designed for beginners. The programs feature a combination of lecture and hands-on experience. Class topics include safety, equipment, and stroke techniques. Both courses are taught by American Canoeing Association Certified Instructor Lynn Lyon.
For the kayaking program, both parent and child will have individual kayaks and basic swimming skills are a requirement.
