|Mildale Farm Community Day Set For June 4|
The public will have an opportunity to explore a recently-acquired Johnson County Park and Recreation District property during a Mildale Farm Community Day on June 4.
The event is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will give interested parties access to the 22-acre rental property in southwest Johnson County as well as to about 13 acres to the east which are actually part of the adjacent 578 acres of agricultural property, all of which was purchased by the District in late February of this year.
In part, this one-time event is being held in conjunction with the District's annual Free Fishing Days. On Saturday, June 4, only, the public can practice catch-and-release fishing in any or all of seven ponds within this roughly 35-acre area. For this event, no license or permit will be required. As a recent acquisition, District officials do not know the stocking history of the ponds at Mildale, but believe some of them contain largemouth bass and possibly channel catfish.
Visitors will be directed to park in the large parking lot near Mildale Farm's main barn and will be given maps and asked to proceed on foot within the designated area. Restrooms will be available, but visitors should consider bringing their own water, suntan lotion, and tick repellant. No organized activities are planned, but visitors can explore and picnic on the grounds and it is anticipated tours will be offered of the property's centerpiece - the two-story equestrian-style barn. The property's two homes and other outbuildings will not be open during this event.
Rules for this event will be posted and will be the same as park rules in place on other District properties. Among them: no alcohol, pets must be on-leash, and vehicles must remain on roadways. Rangers will be on hand to enforce these as well as the catch-and-release fishing provision.
For this event, a one-way traffic route will be used by which visitors will enter through the main Mildale Farm entrance and exit via a service road that returns vehicles to 199th street to the west, just south of 56 Highway near the railroad tracks.
Mildale Farm is located 35250 W. 199th St. To get there, take Interstate 35 south to the Gardner Road exit. Turn left (south) and drive 1 mile to 199th Street. Turn right and proceed 3.5 miles to the Mildale Farm entrance.
