|Tomahawk Hills Golf Course Opens Renovated Facilities|
Following five months of renovations, reconstructed concrete cart paths and tee boxes for two signature holes at the Tomahawk Hills Golf Course will reopen Friday May 6.
To commemorate the opening, Johnson County Park and Recreation District Board Chair Marvin "Doc" Wollen and his invited guests will tee off from the course's Number 18 at 2 p.m.
Both Number 18 and Number 9 have been under construction since early December 2004 to allow Land Links LLC of Janesville, Wisc. to complete the renovations. The firm was selected in November from among four companies which submitted bids. During much of the construction time, only nine holes were open at a time and a temporary path and tee box for Number 18 was employed.
"The design and scope of the renovations are certainly befitting the significance of this truly historic course," Wollen said. "The improvements that have been made will ensure Tomahawk remains one of the area's most scenic courses."
Both elements of the project involved reconfiguring the holes so that players can see the holes' greens from the tee box and reconstructing existing cart paths to lessen what were previously steep grades. As one of the course's signature holes, Number 18 is the challenging hole directly south of the clubhouse requiring players to tee off from above the green approximately one hundred feet below.
Tee box renovations on Number 18 also upgraded the tee box to now provide four distinct tee areas where there was previously only one. An additional tee box was also added to Number 9, which already had two tee boxes, one of which was also rebuilt for this project. Only one of the new tee boxes is open for use on 9 and 18 until the remaining zoysia seed comes in.
The new cart path between the green for Number 12 and the tee for Number 13 is a steep upward incline which players have to traverse to go from the northern lower holes to the southern upper holes. The new cart path comes out next to a new tee box added to Number 13 and the existing tee.
Tomahawk Hills Golf Course is owned and operated by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District and is located at 17501 Midland Drive, Shawnee.
