HUMAN FLAG EVENT TAKES PLACE AT SHAWNEE MISSION PARK
POSTED: 09/28/2001

In a massive show of patriotism and solidarity, an estimated 3,500 people turned out to form a huge Human Flag in Shawnee Mission Park on Friday, Sept. 21. In addition to garnering attention locally, the event has also been mentioned by ABC News’ Good Morning America Co-Anchor Diane Sawyer.

Called "United We Stand," the human flag event was organized on short notice by KCTV Channel 5 and Radio Station 96.5 FM, with assistance from the The Johnson County Park and Recreation District.

The event took place in a bluegrass field in Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee, located west of the District's Administration Building. Participants were each asked to bring a red, white, and blue T-shirt and then asked to don the appropriate color based on their assignment on a grid marked out on the ground. In addition to posing for photos taken from cherry pickers and from a heliocopter, the participants sang God Bless America and other patriotic songs.
