Editor’s Note: because of the number of summer camps being offered this year, we’ve listed this summary of 2004 summer camps in two parts.
CAMP LISTINGS CONTINUED FROM PART I, WHICH INCLUDED FULL-DAY CAMPS, AS WELL AS NATURE- AND SCHIENCE-THEMED CAMPS
SUMMER PRESCHOOL CAMP is for ages 3 -5. Each week, children will enjoy a variety of learning opportunities such as dramatic play, creative arts, cooking, socialization, field trips, and water/pool play. Camp sessions begin weekly from June 6 through Aug. 1. The cost for five 3-hour sessions is $45 for Johnson County residents or $50 for nonresidents.
THEATER CAMP for ages 10-15 is designed to touch on the many aspects of theater, including the basics of movement, voice, diction, script work, and staging. Participants will perform in an end-of-the-session production of the comedy melodrama "Never Trust a City Slicker." This camp consists of four 2½-hour sessions weekly for five weeks beginning June 13. The cost is $185 for Johnson County residents or $204 for nonresidents. New for 200 is FABULOUS FABLES CAMP for ages 5-8. This program will introduce young thespians to drama using familiar fables filled with characters they know. Mini camp consists of five 90-minute sessions beginning June 6. The cost is $65 for Johnson County residents or $72 for nonresidents.
DISCOVERY ART CAMP provides imaginative fun for children ages 9 - 12 and encourages exploration of individual creativity through drawing, painting, design, clay, and crafts. This camp consists of four 2½-hour sessions and is offered beginning June 13 when the theme is "Comic Book Heroes" and again on June 20, when the theme is "Animals, Animals." The cost is $70 for Johnson County residents or $77 for nonresidents.
Also offered are five different dance camps for children up to age 7. New for 2005 is MOMMY OR DADDY & ME DANCE CAMP for ages 1½ to 3 with a parent, which is designed to introduce young children to music and movement. This program is offered beginning June 13, 20, and 27. The cost for four 45-minute lessons is $30 per child and adult for Johnson County residents or $33 for nonresidents. Also new is ACTION HERO DANCE CAMP for ages 4 through 7. Participants will build coordination and develop social skills as they jump as high as tall buildings, run as fast and the wind, and crawl like spiders. This program is offered beginning June 27 and July 11. The cost for four 50-minute lessons is $40 per child and adult for Johnson County residents or $44 for nonresidents. The remaining three dance camps are for ages 3-6 and require tap and ballet shoes. DANCING WITH DISNEY CAMP I will involve tap, ballet, and tumbling to the beat of various Disney songs. This camp consists of four 50-minute sessions and is offered beginning June 13, 20, July 11, and Aug. 8 and 22. The per-child cost is $30 for Johnson County residents or $33 for nonresidents. DANCING WITH DISNEY CAMP II is for those who have completed Dancing With Disney I and will involve learning routines to more great Disney songs. This camp consists of four 50-minute sessions and is offered beginning June 20 and 27, July 11, Aug. 1 and 8. The per-child cost is $35 for Johnson County residents or $39 for nonresidents. LITTLE PRINCESS BALLET CAMP will let participants learn basic ballet steps and use costumes while they dance out characters from classic ballet fairy tales. Camp sessions for this program begin June 27, July 11, Aug. 1, Aug. 8 and 22. The cost for four 50-minute sessions is $35 for Johnson County residents or $39 for nonresidents.
Aimed at slightly older youth, ALL THAT JAZZ & TUMBLING CAMP offers four energetic days of fun tumbling for ages 7-11. Participants will receive lots of individual attention while learning the basics of tumbling to the great sounds of jazz. This program is offered twice with sessions beginning July 18 and Aug. 1. The cost for four 90-minute sessions is $45 for Johnson County residents or $50 for nonresidents.
Kids will have fun in the kitchen with a new program called LET'S GET COOKING CAMP for ages 5-9. Participants will decorate their own chef's hat and apron and have fun making, pizza and cookies. This program is offered once beginning Aug. 1. The cost for four 90-minute sessions is $25 for Johnson County residents or $28 for nonresidents. An additional supply fee of $8 also applies.
In AMERICAN GIRL CAMP for ages 7-9, participants will explore the past and find out what life was like during the times of American Girls characters from the popular book and doll series. Participants will enjoy stories and craft projects from each time period and other hands-on projects. This program is offered three times beginning June 20, July 11 and 18. The cost for four 90-minute sessions is $45 for Johnson County residents or $50 for nonresidents.
NEW HORIZONS CAMP FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS is designed for special needs students between the ages of 6 and 18. Now in its 36th year, this program provides quality summer day camp experiences including daily instructional swims, weekly field trips, sports, games, fitness, creative arts, cooking, and special events. Nine weeks of 8-hour daily programs begin June 6. The cost is $810 for Johnson County residents or $891 for nonresidents.
All District camp programs fully comply with Kansas Department of Health & Environment requirements. Camp directors possess extensive experience with children and in their specialized areas of expertise.
