Get in shape and help local shelter animals with Walk and Hound, Lose a Pound program beginning May 4
POSTED: 04/10/2013

Help an animal at a local shelter while getting yourself into shape during a free new program being offered by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

Walk a Hound, Lose a Pound is the name of this new offering, which is for all ages. This community shelter dog walking program is meant to provide adults and families with children an innovative way to increase physical activity. Participants will meet weekly at the Great Plains SPCA shelter to walk a dog on the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail or at Hickory Hills Park. Participants will find motivation to further their physical activity as they help increase community awareness about dogs available for adoption. Canine benefits include better socialization, and more exercise and leash-walking practice, all of which make these furry friends more adoptable. Participants are asked not to bring along furry friends of their own.

To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under Fun for All and then under special events. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “family fun.”

This program will meet at the Great Plains SPCA, 5428 Antioch Dr., Merriam, at 9 a.m. Saturday beginning May 4. There's no cost for participating, but participants must register, either online at www.jcprd.com or by calling (913) 826-3160 to RSVP.

The JCPRD Activities catalog, with information and a registration form, is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online and for updated program listings, see the district's website at www.jcprd.com
