|Asphalt Chip and Seal To Take Place in October at Shawnee Mission Park|
Installation of an asphalt chip and seal coating on about three miles of roadway throughout Shawnee Mission Park will take place beginning in early October.
Park officials anticipate work will begin on Oct. 4 and will take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting. Pothole repairs throughout the park will precede application of the chip and seal. The chipping and sealing process involves applying a spray-on tar mixture, which is covered with fine gravel and then compacted by a minimum of seven passes of a tire roller.
Park Manager Grant Evans said loose gravel will be noticeable on the affected sections of road for about two weeks after the treatment, but should dissipate as the roadway hardens. The surface should regain its smooth, uniform surface within a month of regular use by automotive traffic.
Harbour Construction of Kansas City, Kan., was selected as the contractor for this project during a bid-letting conducted on Sept. 13.
Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa, and is owned and operated by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. Signs have been posted at park entrances alerting park users of the road project.
