Northernmost Portion of Mill Creek Streamway Park Reopens
POSTED: 08/20/2004
The northernmost portion of a popular hiking and biking trail has reopened after being closed for about a month for repairs, Johnson County Park and Recreation District officials announced. A 1.5-mile portion of the Mill Creek Streamway Park's Gary L. Haller Trail stretching from Wilder Road in Shawnee North to Nelson Island in the Kansas River was closed on July 12 in order to perform concrete repairs and stabilization on the portion of the trail which is located under the Wilder Road bridge. The closure effectively cut off access to Nelson Island, the only publicly-accessible island in the Kansas River in the metropolitan area. Because of its proximity to Mill Creek, this section of the trail has been subject to flooding and shifting. Recently-completed repairs included installing a retaining wall and a four-inch concrete cap.
