|Northernmost Portion of Mill Creek Streamway Park is closed|
Johnson County Park and Recreation District officials announced that a portion of a popular hiking and biking trail will be closed for an extended period of time for repairs.
Closed is a 1.5-mile portion of the Mill Creek Streamway Park's Gary L. Haller Trail stretching from Wilder Road in Shawnee North to Nelson Island in the Kansas River. This portion was closed on July 12 in order to perform concrete repairs and stabilization on the portion of the trail which is located under the Wilder Road bridge. The closure effectively cuts off access to Nelson Island, the only publicly-accessible island in the Kansas River in the metropolitan area, which first opened in 1996.
Mill Creek Streamway Park Manager Eddie Coffey anticipated the trail will remain closed for two to three weeks. Because of its proximity to Mill Creek, this section of the trail has been subject to flooding and shifting. The work to be performed will include installing a retaining wall and a four-inch concrete cap.
This closure is in addition to previously-announced plans close a 2.5-mile portion of the Mill Creek Streamway Park’s Gary L. Haller Trail between the 95th Street and Northwind Trails Access Points on July 20 and 21 for the application of a seal coating as part of ongoing maintenance efforts.
