|Lisa Bentley to participate in Shawnee Mission Medical Center Triathlon|
A professional triathlete known as "The Canadian Super-Smiler" is among those planning to participate in the Shawnee Mission Medical Center Triathlon on July 11. The event will take place beginning at 7 a.m. at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa.
With six career ironman wins, Lisa Bentley, 35, of Ontario is one of the most successful ironman triathletes ever. She has been participating in triathlons on the professional/elite level since 1991 and was named Inside Triathlon's "Person of the Year" in 2003. Her wins include the Ironman Australia in April 2004, 2003, and 2002; the Subaru Ironman Canada, in 2003; and the Ironman New Zealand in 2001 and 2000. Bentley's great success belies the fact that she suffers from acute asthma and cystic fibrosis.
Her omnipresent smile is well known and the source of her nickname - "The Canadian Super Smiler." Inside Triathlon had this to say about her smile: "Bentley's megawatt smile is shared freely with the world, in the throes of hellish hot final miles of an Ironman, in visits with schoolchildren and in casual encounters with fans."
Bentley graduated in 1992 from both The University of Waterloo, Ontario, where she received a bachelor's degree in mathematics, and from The University of Western, Ontario, where she received a bachelor's degree in education. She taught computer science and mathematics for six years. More recently, she has worked as a television race commentator for the Outdoor Life Network and Sportsnet, coached triathlon training camps and clinics, lectured at nutrition and fitness seminars for audiences ranging from grade-school students to adults, and is a proficient and dynamic public speaker.
Among her other interests, Bentley lists "motivating others to participate in sport and fitness and to embrace a life of well-being," building websites, reading and learning new computer programming languages.
The Shawnee Mission Triathlon is presented by Shawnee Mission Medical Center and is sponsored by the Johnson County Park and Recreation District. For more information, call (913) 831-3355 or register online at www.active.com through July 7.
