The Shawnee Mission School District's Work Experience program recently named the Johnson County Park and Recreation District as its Employer of the Year. In addition, Assistant Teacher Victor Wyler, a Shawnee Mission East graduate who has worked with Diemer's after-school care program for nearly two years, was named as the program's Employee of the Year.
"The fact that Victor and JCPRD won the award at the same time suggests how incredibly well the work experience program has worked between SMSD and JCPRD," Deimer Afterschool Director Matt Swigert said.
Both awards were presented during the school district's recent work experience banquet, which took place at Shawnee Mission West High School on April 22.
“For the past two years, Matt Swigert, Child Care Director, has been Victor Wyler’s supervisor providing him with a positive role model in an encouraging and supportive environment," Job Coach Barb Zook wrote in her nomination of the District. "Matt has lead by example. He has helped Victor to develop his skills in interacting with and supervising children. He has creatively expanded Victor’s duties to include the responsibility of monitoring and reporting the inventory of snack and school supplies. Thank you Matt, for seeing the potential in Victor and offering him the opportunity to grow into this job.”
“With Matt Swigert’s leadership and the supportive work environment, Victor has matured into a successful and valuable employee," Zook wrote in her separate nomination of Wyler. "Through Matt’s guidance, Victor has developed his skills in effectively interacting with children and parents. As a result, he had his duties and hours expanded and has become a positive role model for the children enrolled in the program.”
Through the Work Experience program, the school district works with local companies to make sure the students with special needs can find employment, develop job skills, and make positive contributions to the community.
