|Construction project to begin in early October at Shawnee Mission Park’s Renner Road entrance|
“Our basic intent is to reconstruct the entrance to Shawnee Mission Park so that it is safer and more efficient by lining it up with 79th Street east and west,” said JCPRD Project Manager Bill Leek. “The old entrance and exit drives were on an angle with neither of them lining up with 79th Street. That doesn’t meet the needs of today’s traffic volumes and speeds.”
Once this project is complete, the previous paved entrance and exit lanes will be removed, and there will be a new entrance with four lanes including two lanes in each direction, and they will line up with 79th Street.
During the construction process, which could run through Dec. 1, the current exit lanes will be demolished and removed to make way for the new entry, while the current entrance will be marked for one entrance lane and one exit lane. Once the new entry is completed and opened for public use, the existing entrance drive will be demolished and removed permanently.
“During construction, traffic control will be in place to direct people in and out of the park and around the construction activity,” Leek said. “We just ask people to drive carefully and safe through the area because it will be an active construction project. Once it is done, it will be a much-improved entrance and exit to the park.”
This project will also involve removal and replacement of the heavy metal gates as you drive into the park.
During the entrance construction, Shawnee Mission Park’s 87th Street and Ogg Road (weather permitting) entrances will also remain available for use.
There are no plans to place traffic signals at the Renner Road entrance at this time.
Development of the Barkley Plaza where the park’s visitor center previously stood near the park’s flagpole will be a separate project at a later date.
The contractor for this project will be Gridiron Construction LLC of Grandview, Mo.
The Renner Road entrance to Shawnee Mission Park is located at 7900 Renner Road, Lenexa, and Shawnee.
