Help plan the future of the Ernie Miller Nature Center during Park Palooza on Sept. 17
POSTED: 09/13/2017
The Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) is hosting Park Palooza, a free family event with live music and activities, on Sunday, Sept. 17, and will seek feedback on future improvements to the Ernie Miller Nature Center during the event. Park Palooza is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park, 7710 Renner Road in Shawnee, Kansas. Staff from JCPRD and the Ernie Miller Nature Center Master Planning Team will be present. Some staff will be located near the JCPRD Planning and Development Department tent in the park while others will walk throughout the park to talk with attendees about what they would like to experience and enjoy at the nature center. No formal presentations are planned.

Ernie Miller Park and Ernie Miller Nature Center provide a great get away from the urban hustle and bustle of everyday life. The park offers three miles of hiking trails traversing prairies, forest, and a beautiful stream. The nature center allows children of all ages to see native wildlife and learn about nature and history. It provides a laboratory for learning, understanding, and admiring nature.

Community members may visit the nature center’s new exhibit gallery, which features live animal displays and interactive exhibits, to discover more about the park's plants, animals, and history. The nature center also features a 500-gallon aquarium which showcases native stream fish, a wildlife viewing room overlooking a water feature with birdfeeders, and a gift shop for nature enthusiasts.

JCPRD began updating the master plan for Ernie Miller Nature Center this summer, and anticipates completing the planning process in early 2018. Detailed analysis and community events, including Park Palooza, will help the planning team uncover the potential improvements that are important for the nature center’s future. The public is encouraged to join us for Park Palooza on Sept. 17 to share improvement ideas.
