JCPRD’s Katy Renner to receive Open Option Opie Award for efforts on Triathlon & Duathlon
POSTED: 09/06/2017
A Johnson County Park & Recreation District staff member was among persons and organizations who will receive three external awards later this year from Open Options, a Kansas City-area nonprofit serving adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

JCPRD Special Events Coordinator Katy Renner, who has been with the agency since march 2016, was recently announced as the winner of the nonprofit’s Community Partner of the Year Opie Award. This honor recognizes her outstanding partnership with Open Options on the Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon. The honor will be presented during The Opies: An Annual Recognition Event for Employees, Donors and Persons Served luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Doubletree Hilton in Overland Park. In addition to an awards ceremony, this year’s event is also a celebration of Open Options’ 40th anniversary of providing disability services to the Kansas City community, and will feature an appearance from Opie the Otter, Open Options’ mascot.

“We are grateful to our external stakeholders, without whom we could not do the important work of providing services to people with disabilities, many of whom are among the most vulnerable and marginalized people in our community,” said Open Options President and CEO Vincent Bustamante. “Our external stakeholders champion our cause, and are some of our most vocal and passionate advocates of disability awareness.”

Since 2013, Open Options as been the title sponsor of JCPRD’s Open Options Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon, which takes place the second Saturday in July in Shawnee Mission Park.

“Katy has taken our partnership with Open Options to a whole new level this year,” said JCPRD Corporate and Community Wellness Manager Jill Leiker. “She leveraged her relationships as a triathlete and offered more pre-event trainings to keep athletes motivated and anticipating the event. She worked to create an even greater athlete experience through social media by posting event updates and information about the friendly competition amongst athletes to raise donation dollars for Open Options. Her sustained encouragement resulted in athletes raising the highest individual donations for Open Options since the inception of our relationship.”

Other recipients of Opie Awards include: Chrysi and Brian Mall who will receive the Individual Donor of the Year Opie; and Greg Bustamante and Joe Cromer of Digital Evolution Group, who will receive the Corporate Donor of the Year Opie.
