|JCPRD TO BUILD INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUNDS IN STILWELL COMMUNITY PARK & SHAWNEE MISSION PARK CONSTRUCTION ANTICIPATED TO BEGIN THIS FALL|
The Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) is excited to announce that we are developing our first inclusive playgrounds. This fall we are planning to build one in Stilwell Community Park and another in Shawnee Mission Park. Inclusive playgrounds enable all children to play together without physical or social barriers. Such playgrounds are new to the JCPRD system, but they are present in communities across the country, including other KC Metro communities. Each of ours will have a unique design and offer a play experience that the children, parents, and caregivers in Johnson County will enjoy again and again.
It is essential that the playground designs reflect community needs, so we have organized a Steering Committee for the project. Our committee is made up of a wide range of Johnson County stakeholders, including parents, faith-based institutions, advocacy groups, public institutions and agencies, community organizations, and JCPRD officials and staff.
The group gathered for the first time in early August as part of a two-day, intensive design workshop that the Vireo landscape architecture, planning, and design consultant firm led.
The workshop agenda included two Steering Committee meetings during which the participants brainstormed opportunities and challenges with the design team. They identified goals to achieve, issues to remember, and other factors to consider as we developed playground concepts. They also discussed preferred play experiences, surfaces, materials, equipment, and more. At the end of the workshop, the design team presented initial concept plans for each park based on research, conversations with stakeholder groups, and the Committee’s feedback.
JCPRD and the design team will present detailed design plans for the playgrounds at two public open houses in early September. One meeting will be held on September 6 at the JCPRD Administration Building in Shawnee Mission Park (7900 Renner, Shawnee, Kansas 66219)Stilwell on another will be held in Stilwell on September 7 at Stilwell United Methodist Church (19335 Metcalf Avenue, Stilwell, Kansas). Both meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the same information will be on display at each of them. No formal presentations will be given, so the public is welcome to stop by any time during the meetings’ two-hour timeframes. Staff from JCPRD and the design team will be present to discuss the designs and answer questions.
