KC Wildlands Sets May 8 Workday at Shawnee Mission Park and Other Metro Park Sites
POSTED: 04/28/2004
A Kansas City Wildlands workday has been scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday May 8 at Shawnee Mission Park, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee.

Interested parties are invited to assist with land stewardship in the form of removal of woody growth from a four-acre prairie remnant located near Ogg Road, on the north side of the lake. The aim of this workday is to plant native flowers and to remove invasive plants that threaten to choke out sun-loving prairie plants.

KC Wildlands will provide gloves and drinking water and will have tools on-site, though participants are invited to bring their own loppers or saws as well.

Park officials believe that out of Shawnee Mission Park's more than 1,200 total acres, the greatest plant diversity occurs at the Ogg Road prairie. A 1987 plant inventory found 130 species, excluding grasses and woody plants. With the assistance of KC WildLands, which has conducted at least one workday at the site each year since the local conservation coalition was initiated in 2001, focused prairie management has been established at the site.

Similar KC WildLands stewardship projects will also take place simultaneously on May 8 at two locations in Kansas City, Mo.: Jerry Smith Park prairie and at Rocky Point Glades in Swope Park.

For additional information or to register for the May 8 workday, please call KC Wildlands Coordinator Linda Lehrbaum at (816) 561-1061 x116 or e-mail at
