The John Barkley Visitors Center in Shawnee Mission Park will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 31, as staff relocate to new office space located directly behind the existing location near the park entrance at 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee and Lenexa.
Beginning Thursday, Sept. 1, visitors services, including information and fishing and boating permit sales, will be available in a recently-completed addition to the Johnson County Park & Recreation District Administration Building.
The 8,000 square-foot addition, which has been under construction since November 2015, will also house offices for JCPRD’s park police and parks and golf courses departments.
A locking vestibule in the new addition contains new climate controlled restrooms, which will be available year-round during park hours.
The new addition will replace the existing John Barkley Visitors Center and Park Police Headquarters, which are expected to be demolished by the end of the year.
Information and permit sales will be available on Aug. 31 at the Registration and Reservations Department in Building C in Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch. That office can be reached at (913) 831-3359. Permits can also be obtained at numerous retail outlets including; Bass Pro Shop at the customer service counter just inside the store, Scheel's Sporting Goods at the upstairs customer service counter, or all Johnson County Wal-Mart locations (with the exception of Roeland Park) at the sporting goods counter. All outside vendors charge a $1.00 convenience fee for writing the permit.
