New Monarch Migration event for 50 Plus is Sept. 20 at Ernie Miller Park
POSTED: 08/24/2016

Celebrating the monarch butterfly's amazing annual migration is the aim of a special event being presented in late September by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

This new weekday event, called Monarch Migration, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe. Participants will watch a butterfly tagging demonstration and then receive three tags to tag butterflies in the park or in their own yard. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy a picnic in the park after the event.

To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 Plus and then under special events. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keyword “butterfly event.”

This event will take place beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20 The cost for this one-and-one-half-hour event is $15 per person. To register, call (913) 831-3359, or to register online at www.jcprd.com, follow the “Register for Activities” link and do a barcode search for 35597.

While JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at (913) 826-3030 for space availability.

Monarch Migration for 50 Plus is in addition to and separate from the annual Flight of the Monarch special event for all ages, which will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17. For more information about that event, which also requires advance registration, search for barcode 34888.

The Johnson County Park & Recreation District's Activities catalog is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
