Discover downtown Cole Camp, Mo., during social outing for 50 Plus on Sept. 13
POSTED: 08/17/2016

Explore the German town of Cole Camp, Mo., and find out what this quaint town has to offer during a social outing offered by the 50 Plus Department of the Johnson County Park & Recreation District.

The idea behind this occasional series of programs called Discover Downtown is that before suburban sprawl, each city’s downtown served as a hub of activity, and these areas continue to thrive with their own distinctive shops and restaurants. Participants are invited to relax while JCPRD provides the transportation, and then uncover the delights offered by the charming city centers of municipalities just outside the Kansas City metro area by shopping, and eating at a local restaurant.

The next outing will take place on Sept. 13 when participants will go to Cole Camp, a town of about 1,200 located roughly 20 miles south of Sedalia, Mo. Travelers can see pre-Civil War era buildings, stop at Heimsoth Fine Art gallery, check out the local museum, or sample cheeses at 4-K. Visit Main Street shops including Happy Trails, Back in Time Toys, Twice as Nice, Bee Cherished Flowers, and Sweets an’ Tiques Coffee Shop. Lunch is on your own at Handel Haus Gartenfest Tea Room.

To find this program in the JCPRD’s Activities catalog and online listings, browse first under 50 Plus and then under travel. In the catalog and when using the website’s advanced search, look for the keywords “social outing.”

Participants will depart from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and return at approximately 4 p.m. that day. The cost is $25 per person. Lunch costs are on your own. For more information or to register, call (913) 831-3359. To register online at www.jcprd.com, click on the green “Register for Activities” button and complete a barcode search for 35572.

While JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at (913) 826-3030 for space availability.

The JCPRD’s Activities catalog is available for pickup at all Johnson County Library branches.
